MS Life

I work (for now), I love, I live, I have fun. Just with wheelchairs and drugs and spasms and stuff...

Invisible disability?

I’m in a wheelchair and I have an invisible disability

“Carpe Diem!” they shout, “Seize the Day!” “Yay,” we agree, “We’ll definitely make every day count!” A Grand Day Out. Or not. Except Multiple Sclerosis doesn’t quite let us work like that. It toys with us like a deranged cat with a weary mouse. We make thrilling plans – or even teensy plans – for tomorrow. We make resolutions. We have dreams and come up with crazy ideas. “This time it’s really gonna work,” we think, “I can’t let people down again.” And then, randomly, just as something starts to pan out and the coast looks clear, MS sidles up with a sly grin. “Sorry chum,” it smirks, “You’re staying in bed today. You’ve probably got enough energy for a […]

Having carers… Giving in?

Taxi banter Not for the first time in my life, I had a chatty taxi driver this week. And not for the first time, the bloke was nice enough and curious about my disability – though in this case only using it as an intro to be able to talk about his arthritis. I don’t mind, honestly. We all have our challenges. And pain, or worse constant pain, always weighs heavy. And neither do I mind not talking MS. Am happy to explain, happy to put misconceptions wrong, happy above all to laugh at my condition and my frequent mishaps and adventures. But equally happy, nay happier, to listen and talk about other stuff! And not for the last time, […]

Glory, Despair and Coffee before 10 in the morning

I’m back! Have been dawdling with a new website to blog from and I’ve taken bloomin’ ages. I blame Multiple Sclerosis for the delay. Obviously. Planned to have it running for #MSAwarenessWeek. That’s just finished, curses! Or I could wait until #WorldMSDay. Too impatient! Here we go then. Today started, ummm, interestingly. Mrs W is away and my carer doesn’t arrive until 10am (Carers, that’s a good blog topic to plan for). So I needed to do the 8am school run. Luckily, after at least six months adrift and mostly housebound, I am hand-control driving again. That’s all down to my new-found addiction to Wheelchair Rugby. Lots of work on core and upper body strength. (Wheelchair Rugby, that’s a fun […]

Finding my happy place again

“Life is good, just different”, is my oft-repeated mantra. And it’s usually true, honestly. Nothing Multiple Sclerosis has thrown at us has got me down for long. Well, maybe the excruciating nerve pain, a bit. And the phase when I was self-injecting every other day, each time basically giving myself the flu for 24 hours. Meh! I have a loving and much-loved family, a loyal, funny and indulgent set of close friends, and dashing good looks. Maybe not the last bit. At least my funky red wheelchair turns heads. Right now I’m in a bit of a wobbly phase. I am yawning my way through bouts of fatigue, increasing nerve pain attacks and a more-rubbish-than-ever bladder. The less said about […]
